Greetings, friends, and welcome to a cute-and-quick little Valentine’s Day version of I MADE YOU A PLAYLIST!
I love love songs and I love breakup songs, crush songs and revenge songs, first date songs and up-in-flames songs… Gimme all of ‘em. But for your hearts’ sakes (and mine), I’ve left most of the seriously swoon-worthy and/or tear-inducing classics and heavy hitters out of this playlist roundup.
These three collections are pretty light on the pressure and heavy on the serotonin, which makes them solid soundtracks for beating back butterflies or wistful daydreaming… but also for your average Sunday trip to the grocery store.
Anyway, music is my love language, so here you go—enjoy! 💌
WHERE DID YOU COME FROM, BABY?
“You Sexy Thing”
VIBE: Julia Roberts jamming out in the bathtub in the penthouse suite. Lately I’ve been SO obsessed with Zella Day’s cover of “You Sexy Thing”—I can’t explain it! It’s just the most fun and completely addictive! So naturally I had to make a mini playlist of tracks that bring the same energy (one of which is “Kiss” by Prince, hence the Pretty Woman reference).
This one’s for whenever you’re just feelin’ it, whether “it” means your solo bowl of Annie’s mac & cheese or the very promising date you just got back from.
FEATURING: Zella Day, Prince, MUNA, Your Smith, Q, Shania Twain, Go West, Carly Rae Jepsen, Diana Ross
*listen in order
OH NO, I THINK I’M IN LOVE
“lovelorn”
VIBE: Maybe you love someone, maybe you don’t, maybe you’re not really sure—but you probably won’t figure it all out today or tonight, so might as well take a midnight drive and blast some of this sparkly alt-pop. Ice cream should obviously be involved.
FEATURING: Kayla Hall, COIN, Spencer Sutherland, Nightly, joan, Tyzo Bloom, The Band CAMINO, Ryann, The Academic, dvsn
*listen on shuffle
THE ANTI-WALLOWING PLAYLIST
“Move Along”
VIBE: Let that sh*t GO. There are better days ahead! This sonic pep talk was originally created to cure a friend’s breakup woes, but I’m happy to report that it works just as perfectly for cloudy Monday mornings, afternoon slumps, long drives, or house-cleaning jam sessions.
FEATURING: The All-American Rejects, New Radicals, Thunder Jackson, Sheryl Crow, MisterWives, Kelly Clarkson, Dua Lipa, B*Witched, Chloe x Halle, AUDREY NUNA
*listen in order OR shuffle away, you do you!
I’ll leave you with this eye-rollingly-adorable scene from one of my favorite movies—and soundtracks!—of all time, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. (Yes, I just watched the third and final installment, and yes, I cried multiple times. LJ + PK forever.)
Happy Valentine’s Day!
